Over time I have become more and more aware of how much easier it seems for people to be negative rather than staying optimistic. If they have something bad to say, they will without hesitation. But when it comes to spreading something positive, they chose to keep it for themselves.

Of course, this is a general observation and everyone is different. But it seems to me that our mindset is much more prone to notice the negatives more often than the positives.

I personally feel very affected by the energies around me, transmitted through the words I hear daily and the ways in which people think and therefore act. Growing up in a very calm and positive environment, where the cup is always half full rather than half empty, I learned to choose my words positively. But I also have moments where I struggle to see the positives.

An Experiment About The Importance Of Staying Optimistic

I actually realized the importance of positivity when I came across The Big Apple Experiment, where an apple is cut into half and sealed into two different jars. One half is labelled Love and is spoken to and thought about positively. The other is labelled Hate and is negatively talked to and thought about. After a week the results show the Love half to decay much slower and the Hate half to pucker and rotten. Even though they are kept in the exact same environment and conditions.

4 Easy Practices For Avoiding Negative Thoughts

This study has shown me that the words you surround yourself with affect your mind and body, but also the words you say to yourself are as important.

1. I decided that this is the first thing I should do when I’m around negative people, repeat good mantras. I say good words and thoughts to myself, about myself and those around me, to help me keep a clear and optimistic mind.

2. Another thing that I try to do is to tell as many people as possible about the Apple Story. And sometimes ask them to convince themselves by researching how bad negativity can be for them and others.

3. I make an effort to understand that everyone is in a different situation than me. Everyone has been through different situations, therefore react accordingly. I’ve always been passionate about psychology and I’ve always thought that before judging someone it’s best to first put myself in their shoes. This, I think, is important for staying optimistic, and useful when wanting to avoid negative thoughts.

4. During the days when I feel overwhelmed I try to take a couple of minutes before I go to bed to just reflect on the day and on the people I was with. I usually send out positive energies towards them and push out the negative ones that I’ve accumulated during the day or week.

I do this as a form of meditation, since I concentrate on clearing my mind and not letting bad thoughts consume my energies. It’s helpful for anybody aiming for staying optimistic and it assures me a good night’s sleep.
